“Using Description to Draw the Reader Deeper into the Story”

Long, flowing, red hair… check. Violet eyes… check. Chiseled jaw, lock of hair over a prominent brow, broad, muscular shoulders… check, check, check.

Description in a novel can be as dry as bone dust or read like a laundry list. But done right, description can draw a reader deeper into the story. Description is as much about the feeling, person or object being described as it is about the character doing the actual describing. This is deep point of view, taking the reader into the head and heart of a character. Deep point of view allows the reader to see and feel every aspect of the story through the characters experiences, thoughts and feelings. Using description to achieve deep point of view is one of the most powerful tools an author can use to create stories and characters readers will remember long after the last page is turned.

Afternoon Session: Debra Mullins

“Writing Through Adversity”

Life happens. Two truer words were never spoken. But what do you do when life tries to get in the way of your writing? Tough times happen, whether the cause is as simple as an overcrowded schedule or as emotionally complex as a relative with health problems who needs your care. Debra Mullins talks about how to stay focused on your goals when life seems determined to throw obstacles in your path.
